Battery alum Ricky Guarno was chosen by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round of the 2003 Major League Baseball player draft. He was the 107th player selected.
Ricky trained at The Battery for several years. He was there for catching lessons a few times a week, attended The Battery Baseball Winter Academy, took individual hitting lessons with Coach T. and played on the Battery ABC team. As a player he was eager to improve his skills and was at excellent student at Bishop Kearney High School.
Guarno accepted a baseball scholarship at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, and transferred in his junior year to the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. At UALR, Ricky caught the attention of pro scouts after batting .344 in 2003, his 27 doubles was third in the nation among division I players. As a catcher, Ricky threw out nearly half the runners who attempted to steal on him and earned All-Sun Belt Conference first team honors.
